Palmer step closer to Bengals
Bears promote QB coach to coordinator
By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
TAMPA, Fla. Former Cleveland coach Chris Palmer got a step closer to becoming the Bengals' offensive coordinator Monday when the Chicago Bears filled their vacancy in-house.
The Bears, who promoted quarterbacks coach John Shoop to coordinator, had interviewed Palmer on Saturday. Palmer and Bears coach Dick Jauron were on the Jacksonville staff before getting jobs in Cleveland and Chicago two seasons ago.
Palmer was supposed to be in Tampa on Monday to interview with Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy about their offensive coordinator vacancy, but Palmer canceled because he was sick. He is scheduled to interview today with Dungy.
But Dungy favors keeping his job internal, too, and wants to promote quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen, a Dungy assistant for five years.
Palmer is believed to be Bengals coach Dick LeBeau's first choice. Steelers wide receivers coach Bob Bratkowski is second on the list.
