Dillon expected to hire Steinberg

But Bengals have not heard officially

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

OAKLAND, Calif. — Dealing with the Bengals is nothing new to Leigh Steinberg. But now his client will be Corey Dillon.

James Sims, one of Dillon's former agents, said Saturday that the running back has decided to hire the high-profileSteinberg, who has represented four of the Bengals' past nine initial draft picks — David Klingler (1992), Dan Wilkinson (1994), Ki-Jana Carter (1995) and Akili Smith (1999).

Several attempts to reach Steinberg at his Newport Beach, Calif., office were not successful. Attempts to reach Dillon at his mother's home in Seattle also were unsuccessful Saturday.

Under league rules, a player has five days to report changes in representation to his team. Katie Blackburn, Bengals executive vice president, said Saturday the team has yet to receive any word from Dillon about a new agent.

The first move for Steinberg will be to verify the existence of a $60 million, eight-year offer from the Bengals that Sims and his partner, David Levine, said Dillon turned down in December.

Neither Blackburn nor Bengals president Mike Brown would discuss specific dollar amounts of the Dillon negotiations.

Levine and Sims said the club's deal would give Dillon $12 million to sign and would be worth $19.5 million in cash in the first three seasons. Dillon said Friday he heard nothing of a $60 million deal from the agents, but he did acknowledge talk of a $12 million signing bonus.

Dillon fired Levine and Sims, the agents said, because their advice to take the offer conflicted with his wishes to be a free agent.

If he doesn't sign with the Bengals, Dillon becomes a free agent March 2. But Brown has said the team will use the transition tag to match any offer Dillon receives from another team.
