Bengals coaching search hits roadblocks

Current teams ban Childress, Knapp from interviewing

OAKLAND, Calif. — Bengals coach Dick LeBeau continues his search for an offensive coordinator but has encountered a couple of roadblocks that he expected.

Two coaches on his wish list, quarterbacks coaches Brad Childress of Philadelphia and Greg Knapp of San Francisco, have been prohibited from interviewing with other teams because they are under contract.

Childress, who turned Donovan McNabb into an MVP candidate, was under contract through 2001 and received a raise and a two-year extension to stay with the Eagles.

Arizona was interested in Childress but was denied permission to interview him.

Knapp, who played a part in helping Jeff Garcia earn a Pro Bowl selection, also has signed an extension with the 49ers.

Another possible candidate became available when Chris Palmer was fired as head coach in Cleveland. He was offensive coordinator in Jacksonville before taking over the expansion team.

Other coordinators also looking for work are Jimmy Kaye, let go in Kansas City with head coach Gunther Cunningham, and Joe Pendry, axed in Buffalo with head coach Wade Phillips.

LeBeau is not interested in Les Steckel, who was fired in successive seasons as offensive coordinator in Tennessee and Tampa Bay.

LeBeau plans to interview fired Steelers offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride and current receivers coach Bob Bratkowski early next week in Mobile, Ala., during practices for the upcoming Senior Bowl.
