Jackson's experience gives Bengals hope
By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Bengals tackle John Jackson has told the story to any of his offensive teammates who will listen.
In 1990, Jackson's third year in Pittsburgh and offensive coordinator Joe Walton's first, the Steelers didn't score an offensive touchdown during the opening month of the season.
They were 1-3 and had been outscored 70-32. Then the Steelers exploded, scoring 36, 34, 41 and 21 to win four of five games.
Jackson's point? You don't give up on yourself, he said Friday. We kept fighting and told each other the only place it's going to start is with us.
The 0-6 Bengals, on pace to set a single-season low for points, are taking a similar approach toward trying to end their scoring drought today when the 4-3 Denver Broncos visit Paul Brown Stadium at 1 p.m.
We're a young enough team that we can't change too many things from week to week, offensive coordinator Ken Anderson said. What has to happen for us is we have to execute.
The winless Bengals have scored 37 points in six games, 30 by the offense and seven by the defense. They were shut out for the third time Sunday in Pittsburgh. Entering Week 8, 23 indi vidual players around the NFL have scored more points than Cincinnati.
The Bengals again will try to establish their running game with featured back Corey Dillon against a Denver defense that's second best in the league by allowing only 65 yards rushing a game. They'll again try to get the ball in the hands of playmaker Peter Warrick.
