Bengals Notebook

Scott visits practice

By Neil Schmidt
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Bengals coach Dick LeBeau huddled with the team after Friday's practice and said, “You've gotta watch the security. They let anybody into practice.”

He was poking fun at Darnay Scott, whom he promptly hugged. The injured receiver, out for the season because of broken leg suf fered in August, paid his first visit to a practice since training camp.

Scott has attended the Bengals' home games but otherwise has been in St. Louis rehabilitating his leg and overseeing construction of a new house.

“I feel good,” Scott said. “I'm off crutches; I'm walking straight. I'm a lot better than (doctors) thought I'd be at this point. If it's cool next month, they say I can start on a light jog on the treadmill.”

Scott said he plans to attend more practices and will be in town for many offseason workouts.

“I'm going to start being around a lot more,” he said. “I'm only an hour away on a flight. I'm going to see if my experience can pump the boys up to get them going.”

Scott used the word “we” in every sentence, and said he feels a part of this team even though he can't help it on the field.

“It hurts me to watch the games and see us not be successful,” he said. “It's hard to (pinpoint) the problem. It's the whole offense; we're not clicking right now.”

Scott is planning to be 100 percent by minicamp next spring.

“It is what it is right now,” he said. “I've just got to wait until next year when my time comes.”

INACTIVES: The Bengals announced four inactive players for Sunday's game: center Rich Braham, linebacker Brian Simmons, receiver Damon Griffin and safety JoJuan Armour.

The Bengals must deactivate three more players and their third-string quarterback, probably Scott Covington, before game time Sunday.

MACK NEARS 3,000: Tremain Mack will enter Sunday's game with 2,941 career kickoff return yards.

Mack already is the club's career leader in kickoff return yards, having passed Stanford Jennings (2,752 yards) earlier this season. He needs 59 yards Sunday against Denver to reach 3,000.

Mack set the team's single-game kickoff return yardage record with 212 vs. Denver on Nov. 1, 1998. Mack had seven returns that day, including a 61-yarder.
