Warrick eager to win again

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

BALTIMORE — Peter Warrick, the rookie wide receiver whose teams went 45-4 at Florida State, is winless in Cincinnati. He's taking aim at small victories as a way to achieve some bigger ones.

“I don't think I've ever been 0-2 nowhere, my whole life,” Warrick said. “The only thing that can erase that is winning.”

So Warrick and his Florida State buddy, Ron Dugans, the Bengals' other starting wide receiver, go to practice early and stay late. It's correcting the shortcomings in his game, Warrick knows, that will help the team change course.

“I'm a better player,” he said. “I can feel it.”

It was Wednesday in the loading dock at Paul Brown Stadium. Warrick demonstrated a move he has learned in the NFL. Rain fell outside. Water dripped from Warrick's face and arms.

“You're the DB (defensive back),” he said while positioning a reporter in front of him. “Instead of me going outside to get around him, I go right here (off the other player's hip).”

Warrick stepped past the reporter. His voice faded in tape recorders.

“But if I go up field like this, I get the DB behind me, and he can't get an angle on me,” he said.

Losing is a bad habit in Cincinnati. Warrick's learning how he can get around that, too.

“I used to get mad and cry and all that,” he said. “I hate to lose, but I'm learning you can't win every game, but we can go out there and try. Once you feel like you've tried your best, that's all that matters.”
