Ravens tout Bengals offense

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Baltimore coach Brian Billick sees a lot of talent on the Bengals offense.

In fact, he compares the Cincinnati trio of quarterback Akili Smith, running back Corey Dillon and wide receiver Peter Warrick to the big three players in Indianapolis — quarterback Peyton Manning, running back Edgerrin James and wide receiver Marvin Harrison.

“They have a dangerous team,” Billick said. “We didn't have a good defensive performance against Miami. We are going to need a considerably better effort against a team that probably has more weapons than Miami.”

The Ravens, who lost 19-6 in Miami, will play host Sunday to the Bengals in Baltimore.

Baltimore is 2-1. Cincinnati, which has scored only seven points in two games, is 0-2.

THIEF: Baltimore safety Rod Woodson played 10 years in Pittsburgh, one in San Francisco and two in Baltimore for the Ravens. He has played in the AFC Central against the Bengals for 12 of his 13 seasons.

With 54 career interceptions, it comes as little surprise that the Bengals have been his No.1 victim. Woodson intercepted former Bengals quarterback Jeff Blake five times and the retired Boomer Esiason four times.

Cincinnati coach Bruce Coslet has see a lot of Woodson.

“He's a solid vet who knows the defense inside and out,” he said. “He's an extremely good blitzer. They play him at safety, but he still has corner cover skills. He's just a good player, one of the best that's ever played.”

RECORD PACE: Smith has been sacked 12 times in the first two games, a pace that would give him 96 for the season and shatter the team record.

Ken Anderson (46) and Jack Thompson (16) and Steve Kreider (1) were sacked 63 times in 1979.

The 1986 Eagles have the record at 104, including 72 times for Randall Cunningham.

INJURY REPORT: Four Bengals are out for the Baltimore game: They are running back Michael Basnight (wrist), defensive end Vaughn Booker (fainting episode), linebacker Brian Simmons (knee) and center Rich Braham (knee). Offensive tackle Rod Jones (shoulder) is probable.

For the Ravens, quarterback Trent Dilfer (knee) is doubtful and receiver Jadry Ismil (knee) and tight end John Jones (knee) are questionable.
