BENGALS NOTEBOOK
Barndt trying to stay positive
By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Bengals defensive tackle Tom Barndt played for winning teams three of his four seasons in Kansas City before joining the Bengals as an unrestricted free agent.
Barndt, who didn't play in the preseason because of a pulled chest muscle, played almost every defensive snap Sunday against the Browns except third downs.
He was impressed with how his new teammates responded to the disappointing loss to the Browns.
The team has to stay together, and I think we will, Barndt said. The way you handle yourself after a win or a loss isn't that much different. You watch the film. You watch yourself. You pick out what you can fix and you go to work to do it. Like a real professional knows, it's a 16-game season and you do it one step at a time.
If you don't get caught up in finger pointing, and I haven't heard any of that, and if you can have thick skin from the outside, then you can move forward. That's what has to happen.
ANGRY CATS: The Bengals will play in Jacksonville Sunday against the Jaguars (1-1), who lost 39-36 to Baltimore.
They're not going to be in the best of moods, coach Bruce Coslet said Monday. (Quarterback Mark) Brunell is special. Is it panic mode time? No. What happened last week doesn't count.
STAT TIME: Akili Smith has a 43.8 quarterback rating, ahead of only San Diego's Ryan Leaf in the AFC.
The Bengals are last in the conference in yards gained on first down (2.41) and last in yards allowed on first down (6.67).
With the loss Sunday, the Bengals are 7-29 before October since 1991.
PELFREY SIGHTING: Former Bengals kicker Doug Pelfrey is on the short list of veteran NFL kickers mentioned every time a regular kicker goes down. This time it's Den ver's Jason Elam, who suffered broken bones in his back Sunday and is out indefinitely. Pelfrey is mentioned along with Joe Nedney, Michael Husted and Todd Peterson.
INJURY REPORT: Tight end Tony McGee is doubtful for the Jacksonville game with a right ankle sprain and a bruise on a toe on his left foot.
McGee has started 104 consecutive games, the longest of any Bengals player. His streak dates to his rookie year of 1993.
Long snapper Brad St. Louis dislocated the little finger on his left hand twice in the Browns game but continued to play and will play against the Jaguars.
