The house is named for Paul Brown, but it was Peter Warrick who brought it down Saturday with a scintillating reverse for a touchdown and an equally rousing launch of himself into the stands.

Nobody knew it for sure at the time — the touchdown put the Bengals back in the game, down 14-7 — but it definitely turned the momentum and got the Bengals on the road to winning the football game.

“I call that the "PB Leap,'” said Warrick, who rocketed himself over the eight-foot high wall behind the end zone.

That was no easy feat; there is no padding on the ledge of that wall, which means the leap has to be like a high jump — enough to clear the bar, in other words.

“The fans helped me up,” Warrick said. “They grabbed my arms and pulled me up in there. Then they banged on my helmet. I loved it. I'd been planning this (the PB Leap) for about a week.

“You haven't seen the last of it.”

The stadium's namesake would have loved it.

First of all, because the play was creative. Second, because PB liked the Ickey Shuffle, so heck, he would have liked the PB Leap at least just as much.

OK, so maybe he would have preferred another name for it — and another name on the stadium, too — but he no doubt would have liked the symmetry of it. Paul Brown Stadium, PB Leap.

PB was famous for saying that getting carried away with too much celebration after a touchdown was not the way to go.

“Act like you've been there before,” he liked to say.

But nobody had ever been “here” before.

“Here” being the Bengals' end zone. It was opening night of the stadium, and Warrick's touchdown christened even more than the fireworks and the fighter-jet fly-by and all of the Who-dey? chants combined.

“When I (got the ball) and saw the safety come up, I said to myself, "Touchdown,'” said Warrick.

He credited James Hundon with making a key block on the play.

Warrick said he was pleased to also to have made a contribution to the success enjoyed by tight end Tony McGee. The Bears were committing four defensive backs to two Bengals wide receivers, and McGee was definitely the beneficiary of that attention elsewhere.

“It was great to see the crowd so into it,” Warrick said. “They hyped us up. I loved that. It's my favorite part (of the new stadium).”

Bengals head coach Bruce Coslet called Warrick “gifted. He's quick ... He has tremendous hands — "plucking'-type hands ... and he's a very hard worker.”
