Spotlight on: Kickers

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

This is last in a series of looks at the Bengals by position.

        • Projected starter: Neil Rackers. The depth chart for the third preseason game still lists popular veteran Doug Pelfrey as the starter, but it has been relatively clear for a week that the Bengals will keep Rackers. The sixth-round draft pick from Illinois has been perfect in the preseason. He has made his only extra point and is 3-for-3 on field goals of 20, 41 and 47 yards. He also can kick off deeper than Pelfrey.

        • 2. Doug Pelfrey. A seven-year veteran from the University of Kentucky, Pelfrey struggled through his worst professional season in 1999, making 18 of 27 field goals and missing seven times inside the 40-yard line. He has been criticized for his shorter kickoffs. Possible destinations for Pelfrey if he is cut are Carolina, Dallas or Chicago.
