Spotlight on: Punters

By Mark Curnutte

The Cincinnati Enquirer

This is one in a series of looks at the Bengals by position.

        • Projected starter: Brad Costello. This one is almost too close to call. Costello, who has punted in parts of the last two seasons, has a powerful leg but has lacked consistency. He has punted five times in two preseason games and has a 45.2-yard average. He also holds on place kicks. Costello's experience kicking off helps him in the battle for a job.

        • 2. Daniel Pope. Picked up off waivers from Kansas City, Pope punted 101 times for a 41.8-yard average for the Chiefs in 1999. He has punted five times in the 2000 preseason with the Bengals for a 43.8-yard average. He also was Kansas City's holder on place kicks.
