CB Roman ends holdout

The Cincinnati Enquirer

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Cornerback Mark Roman, the Bengals' second-round draft pick out of LSU, ended his holdout late Monday night.

Roman reportedly agreed to a 4-year deal and was expected to report to training camp today.

Secondary coach Ray Horton had telephoned Roman recently.

“I said the main thing is to stay positive,” Horton said Monday. “Is he behind? Yeah, he is. What's this going to do to his future? I don't know what kind of player he's going to be, but I think he's going to be a pretty good one. It's safe to say when he shows up, he'll make our team.”

That leaves running back Corey Dillon as the only holdout. Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn said Monday there has been no progress on talks with agent Marvin Demoff.

WALKING WOUNDED: Two injured Bengals were at camp Monday. Running back Michael Basnight and defensive lineman Michael Bankston both said they were going to be back in uniform sooner than expected.

Bankston, who had surgery last week on his knee, said he should be back by the regular-season opener Sept. 10. Basnight, who broke a bone in his right wrist in the team's scrimmage, said he'll be ready in six weeks. Team trainers, however, said Basnight is looking at a recovery time of eight to 10 weeks.

GYPSY ROSE DeMARCO: Guard Brian DeMarco left Monday afternoon's practice minus a few pieces of clothing.

Each of his size 15 cleats went to young fans, as did his playing gloves.

“They stripped me,” DeMarco said after signing several autographs.

UP NEXT: The Bengals practice twice today at Georgetown College. Both the 9:30-11 a.m. and 3-4:30 p.m. sessions are open to the public.
