Scott pays up, apologizes for bad check
By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
GEORGETOWN, Ky. Receiver Darnay Scott has repaid a Florence, Ky., company the money he owed for repairs on a custom-built motorcycle, his lawyer said Friday.
Scott was arrested July 21 on a felony charge of theft by deception and jailed in Boone County for writing a bad check to J&J Custom Cycles. The bad check was for $5,157.92 and was written June 10.
He apologized to the company for the problems he's caused and is going to continue to be a customer at J&J, said Philip Taliaferro, a Covington lawyer.
Taliaferro will appear for Scott on Friday in Boone County District Court and ask the judge for an Aug.17 date for Scott to appear. Scott will be in Buffalo on Friday, when the Bengals open their preseason that night against the Bills.
Darnay will be at court on Aug. 17, his attorney said. He will not only apologize to J&J, but he will apologize for any embarrassment he has caused his team and his teammates.
NO MACK: Kick returner/safety Tremain Mack missed his third consecutive day of training camp Friday. He was in his hometown of Tyler, Texas, fulfilling an obligation related to a drunken driving conviction.
The Pro Bowl kick returner is also to attend a mandatory class in Tyler on Monday. But the Bengals expect him to be in Georgetown today for their intrasquad scrimmage.
The coaching staff is monitoring his situation, Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said. They are aware of his plans.
The team is fining Mack for each day of camp he misses. The Bengals say Mack could have taken care of his legal business but put it off to the last minute. An NFL team can fine a player up to $5,000 a day for each missed day.
AKILI'S SHEETS: Quarterback Akili Smith missed Friday morning's skills session no pads but practiced in the afternoon.
The problem was the bedsheets and pillow case Smith apparently bought and slept on without first washing. He had an allergic reaction and was treated before suiting up.
POETRY IN MOTION: Running back Michael Basnight has published a book of poetry titled Deeper Than the Game (Basnight Books). It's a collection of poems Basnight has written, and it's targeted to people 18-30 years old.
There are love poems, poems from the streets, said Basnight, 22, a Norfolk, Va., native who has a bachelor's degree in art design from North Carolina A&T.
The book will be available Sept. 9, the day Basnight's alma mater plays Tennessee State in the Riverfront Classic at Cinergy Field.
INJURY REPORT: Defensive end John Copeland is out of today's scrimmage because of an injured knee. Scott is out because of tendinitis in his right ankle.
Safety Lawrence Wright (bruised ribs), defensive end Michael Bankston (swollen right knee and calf) and linebacker Takeo Spikes (right shoulder strain) are also out.
Defensive tackle Oliver Gibson (sprained left knee) is questionable, and receiver Craig Yeast (sore hamstring) is doubtful.
