Warrick can't do service time here
Top pick won't arrive 'til June
By Neil Schmidt
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Peter Warrick will be gathering trash rather than Akili Smith passes the next three weeks. But while he toils along Florida interstates, his agents will be working on a contract.
Today is the first day rookies can return to their NFL teams for informal workouts, provided their college classes have graduated. Warrick is the only Bengal draftee expected not to return, after a late bid to transfer his community service work to Ohio failed.
I'm unhappy about it, said Cincinnati-based agent James Gould, who has partnered with Los Angeles-based Norm Nixon to represent Warrick. But what's more important is to get the work completed and put that behind him so he can concentrate on his new career.
Gould said approximately 20 days remain in Warrick's 30-day sentence for petty theft. He must pick up roadside trash 10 hours per day.
The plan now is to have Warrick come to Cincinnati around June 5 and remain through June, when many veterans will be in town for voluntary workouts, and return to Florida in early July to finish his service.
Gould said he and Nixon will have a conference call with Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn to begin informal talks.
It's good they are ready to talk sooner rather than later, Bengals president Mike Brown said. We would like to negotiate the deal and have him here from the very beginning.
