Carter surgery won't cost games

RB injured again

BY Neil Schmidt
The Cincinnati Enquirer

If Ki-Jana Carter has improved in anything, it is timing. At least his latest injury came in the offseason.

The star-crossed Bengals running back probably will need another surgery after injuring his right knee, but he is expected to return before the season starts in September.

“When I did it I went, "Oh man, not again,'” Carter said. “But I didn't feel the same pain-wise as last year. Now after getting it looked at, I know it's going to be OK.”

Carter, whose year ended early with injury in three of his five NFL seasons, suffered a dislocated kneecap Tuesday in a workout near his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He did the same thing last year in the third week at Carolina and was put on injured reserve for the rest of the season.

“He has had one bad break after another, but he always handles them as well as anyone could,” Bengals president Mike Brown said. “We hope he'll be back in time for training camp (in July).”

Carter was examined Thursday in Miami by ortho pedist James Andrews. He prescribed an arthroscopic procedure to prevent recurrence of the injury. Carter would need 3-4 months of rehabilitation before returning.

“If I don't get anything done, it might happen again, so I think I'll get it done so I shouldn't have to worry about it again,” Carter said.

Carter cleared his end-of-season physical, which means it's a non-football injury be cause it came in a private workout. The Bengals wouldn't have to pay his $1.7 million salary if he missed the season.

Bengals trainer Paul Sparling said the kneecap slid out of place while Carter was jumping, but it didn't go all the way out.

The condition is similar to what occasionally sidelines running back Corey Dillon. But Dillon's injury wasn't caused by a traumatic event as Carter's was.
