First-week bye won't help Bengals

BY GEOFF HOBSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Even though his Chargers came out of a bye on last season's first weekend to rout the Bengals 34-7, San Diego coach Mike Riley is no fan of playing 16 straight games.

His advice to a Bengals team that is off Sept.3 this year is, “to look at the positive of it,” but Tuesday he couldn't find much of that.

“I wouldn't want to have it that way, ever,” Riley said.

“It was nice, because you kind of take a breather after the presea son and get gathered and settled after training camp,” he said. “But that was negated almost as the season began, because there was no time to take a deep breath. ... It would have been nice to have a timeout during our losing streak to help us regain our confidence.”

The Chargers lost the AFC West Division by a game in finishing 8-8. They started 4-1 and finished 4-1 but lost six straight in between.
