Bengals' O'Dwyer suspended for bar fight

A July bar fight has cost Bengals guard Matt O'Dwyer $14,000 and a two-game suspension from the NFL.

Jumbo Elliott of the New York Jets got the same punishment as O'Dwyer. The other player involved in the fight, Jason Fabini of the Jets, was fined $14,000.

The penalties were part of an NFL effort to crack down on crime. Denard Walker, a starting cornerback for the Tennessee Titans, also was suspended Tuesday for two games after pleading guilty to assault on the mother of his son.

“I support the commissioner's office stepping in,” Bengals President Mike Brown said. “The league needs to assert itself and set standards for the players.”

O'Dwyer was signed as a free agent before last season. He was the team's starting left guard.

Backup Mike Goff and Scott Rehberg, a recent signee from the Cleveland Browns, probably will fill in for O'Dwyer during the suspension.

“It's a little too far off to predict,” Brown said. “But, if we were playing today, that's how we'd do it.”

Elliott, Fabini and O'Dwyer, a former Jet, were arrested July 10, 1999, outside Bogart's, a Long Island bar.

Elliott, who recently retired, pleaded guilty to harassment and disorderly conduct. He was fined $250 and or dered to perform 50 hours of community service.

Fabini, the former University of Cincinnati player, had a lesser role and received a lesser sentence. O'Dwyer pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and third-degree assault and was sentenced to three years' probation. He also was ordered to pay $4,373 in restitution for kicking out a police car window.
