No offers yet for Bengals' No. 4 draft pick

BY GEOFF HOBSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Bengals have heard the rumors that the Jets and Buccaneers are interested in Cincinnati's fourth pick in the NFL draft.

But no one has called with an offer.

“We read about it in the New York papers and the Tampa papers, but we haven't heard from anyone,” said Bengals President Mike Brown on Monday. “Obviously, we'll listen to anything if people call.”

The Jets apparently have backed off trading wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson to the Ravens for the fifth pick, but Baltimore is reportedly still committed to getting a receiver.

Bengals wide receiver Carl Pickens continues to be an option, but only if Brown is convinced Pickens could be replaced with the Ravens' second-round pick at No.46.

BACKUP TALK: Quarterback Akili Smith is comfortable with the signing of veteran Scott Mitchell.

“It's a good move by management to get a veteran quarterback in here,” Smith said. “That said, as a second-year guy, my job is to make sure I keep him on the bench. Scott Mitchell is a good NFL quarterback and it'll be good in the locker room trying to show some guys what it is to be a pro. I'm going to definitely watch how he does things.”

Smith said the feelings surrounding the quarterback spot have changed since Jeff Blake left.

“Blake had something to prove,” Smith said. “He'd been through a lot here with Boomer (Esiason), David Klingler, me, and he didn't feel he was given an opportunity to play. There was competition when I stepped into the locker room. It might be a a lot different with Scott Mitchell coming in knowing he's my backup.”

COWBOYS: The Cowboys have agreed to terms on a four-year contract with free agent free safety George Teague.

Unnamed sources told the Dallas Morning News that Teague was expected to count about $800,000 against the club's 2000 salary cap.

RAVENS: Linebacker Ray Lewis, out on $1 million bail pending his trial in May for a double-murder in Atlanta, has been working out at the Ravens' training complex. The facility is located just a few miles from his Maryland home.
