Prentice: Miami background shouldn't matter

BY GEOFF HOBSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer

INDIANAPOLIS - Travis Prentice, the greatest running back in the history of the Mid-American Conference, gazed at the media this weekend covering the NFL scouting combine. The question concerned what impact playing at small Miami University has on his draft status.

“Does it matter?” Prentice asked. “I'm here now with all these other guys and have been since the Senior Bowl.”

The 5-foot-11, 225-pound Pren tice figures to go in the second round. Fellow MAC alum and Marshall quarterback Chad Pennington should go in the first round. The rise of former Marshall receiver Randy Moss seems to have ended that discussion.

As usual, personnel people have their doubts. Some personnel types see Prentice more as a situational back rather than an every-down player and wonder if he's capable catching the ball.

So Prentice has been working on his catching ever since he started working out at a New Orleans camp Jan. 10. He figures the scouts just haven't seen what he can do because Miami didn't have to throw him the ball.

“He has all the physical parts,' said Bengals President Mike Brown. He's big enough. You just don't know how he'll run in the league when it comes to agility and quickness. Physically, he should become a solid NFL back.”
