Standing water halts Paul Brown crane
BY DAN KLEPAL
The Cincinnati Enquirer
A crane on the west side of Paul Brown Stadium has been unable to operate for the past three days because of standing water on the site.
That means crews have been unable to work connecting the massive steel beams atop the stadium that will hold the structure's canopy in place.
The canopy is a key and striking aspect of the stadium's design.
Dan Streyle, project manager, said the crane should be back in business in the next day or two. Mr. Streyle said the stadium will make its Aug. 19 deadline.
I can't quantify it, Mr. Streyle said. We've lost three days with that crane, but we've been able to work everywhere else.
Crews had been using two cranes, one on each side of the stadium, so that they can install the beams more quickly.
It's important to finish the work as soon as possible, because the crane is sitting where a future concrete plaza will be. And the concrete can't be poured until the crane is moved, Mr. Streyle said.
The recent rains also damaged drywall inside the stadium. Between $10,000 and $20,000 of hung drywall was ruined.
Mr. Streyle said he's not sure whether the loss is insured.
When you have a building not fully enclosed, those things can happen, Mr. Streyle said. We just couldn't wait to start until the building was fully enclosed.
