Bengals changing uniforms?
BENGALS NOTEBOOK
BY GEOFF HOBSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Quarterback Akili Smith likes the idea of a new stadium, a beefed-up equipment room staff and all the rest. He also likes the idea of new uniforms for 2001, an idea being discussed informally by club personnel and some players.
There are no plans or decisions on the drawing board, but Smith and some of his teammates are just saying, Wouldn't it be great if ... ?
I think it would be great if we had the colors of a real Bengal tiger. All white and black, Smith said.
Smith's idea is having a home uniform that's all black with a white stripe down the jersey and pants, a la the Broncos' orange stripe, and a white uniform with a black stripe on the road. And maybe an all-black helmet with white stripes.
Just an idea, said Smith, who has kicked it around with Takeo Spikes, Brian Simmons and Darnay Scott.
MACK RECOVERING: The Bengals hope safety Tremain Mack can participate in offseason workouts that begin in the middle of May. He'll probably be limited at the April 28-May 1 mini-camp, after undergoing surgery next week on the left wrist he broke returning a kick in last week's Pro Bowl.
Backup defensive lineman Andre Purvis underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a tendon in his knee. The club should know by today how long he'll be shelved.
