Von Oelhoffen bolts Bengals for $10M
BY GEOFF HOBSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Pittsburgh Steelers floored the Bengals with their $10 million signing of nose tackle Kimo von Oelhoffen Monday. But that signing may give the Bengals a shot at highly regarded Steelers nose tackle Joel Steed.
Von Oelhoffen, who made $750,000 last season with the Bengals, agreed to a four-year contract in Pittsburgh that includes a $3 million signing bonus and $1 million playing time incentive.
Steed, hobbled by knee problems, is expected to be cut today to make room for von Oelhoffen under the salary cap. A favorite of Bengals defensive co ordinator Dick LeBeau, may get some interest from Cincinnati if he's able to play.
By the end of last season in Cincinnati, von Oelhoffen had been beaten out at nose tackle by former Steeler Oliver Gibson, a Steed backup.
But in the last half of the season when he occasionally played end in a four-man line, von Oelhoffen apparently showed the Steelers some life. He told the Pittsburgh media Monday he never felt he had a commitment from the Bengals.
