Bengals, Johnson settle grievance
BY GEOFF HOBSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Former Bengals punter Lee Johnson said Monday he recently resolved his year-old grievance against his old club when he settled for $12,000.
Johnson, now with the New England Patriots, was cut by the Bengals Dec. 7, 1998, a day after he criticized management. The day after he was released, he was fined one game check of $20,588.24 for conduct det rimental to the team.
Since NFL players can only be waived because of performance, Johnson felt the fine proved he was cut because of his comments. The NFL Players Association also argued a player couldn't be fined if he was already released.
About two weeks ago, Johnson learned the NFLPA had reached the $12,000 settlement.
