Akili's health may decide if Blake gets tag

Bengals GM Mike Brown says a decision about placing a tag on quarterback Jeff Blake making him a restricted free agent hinges largely on the health of rookie quarterback Akili Smith.
Brown says plenty of doctors have said Smith's severely sprained right big toe won't be a chronic problem and that he should recover fully.
But the Bengals don't have to decide for another two months if they want to use a tag, so expect them to go to the deadline to make sure Smith can go.
If Akili were healthy, we would feel better about our quarterback situation and probably be less inclined to (tag) Jeff, Brown said.
LOCAL TALK: Browns fullback Marc Edwards plays his first game at Cinergy today since he strapped it up for the Reading Little Devils in little league football. Edwards, the Norwood product out of Notre Dame, has been used mainly as a receiver with 23 catches and two touchdowns.
I've lined up as a little bit of everything, sometimes as a tight end, sometimes as a receiver, sometimes as a back, said Edwards, who has carried just four times. Any back would like to run it more, but I'm getting work.
Edwards told his followers they'd have to get their own tickets because he didn't have time for the logistics, but he still figures a couple hundred family and friends will be there.
Between (Browns quarterback) Tim Couch and I, we'll have half the place, said Edwards of the Hyden, Ky. product.
