First one to 100 loses

Bengals, Rams can reach milestone for futility

BY GEOFF HOBSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer

By 4p.m. today, either the Bengals or the St. Louis Rams will be the first NFL team to lose 100 games in the 1990s. But the two teams have already lived a decade this season.

The rejuvenated Rams come into Cinergy Field 2-0 on the arm of former Arena League quarterback Kurt Warner for the 1 p.m. game. The Bengals, losers of 13 of their last 14 and 0-3 this season, already lost the week of preparation to locker room diversions with the release of popular fullback Brian Milne and Ki-Jana Carter's pointed remarks about management.

“Your environment is what makes you,” said Bengals linebacker Takeo Spikes. “That's what's kind of going on here. Regardless of how positive people may get, it seems like something is always happening around here. We have to be mentally strong. We had a good week of practice. It started out rainy and cold and no one wanted to practice, but I'm proud of how we came back.”

The Bengals can be assured of a surly welcome at Cinergy, where they haven't won in 357 days and been outscored 189-83 since that Oct.11 win over Pittsburgh.
