BENGALS NOTEBOOK
Coslet wants Blake to start and finish
BY TOM GROESCHEN
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Bengals coach Bruce Coslet ended the suspense Friday, or at least whatever suspense an 0-2 NFL team can generate.
Coslet said Jeff Blake will start at quarterback Sunday vs. Carolina, capping a week that began with Blake (sprained throwing shoulder) listed as questionable.
If we don't have a setback, Blake will start, Coslet said.
Blake was sore after San Diego's Junior Seau smashed him into the Cinergy Field turf last Sunday, but gradually increased his workload this week. Friday, he threw several short and intermediate passes as the Bengals practiced in helmets and shorts. Blake declined interviews, saying he had discussed it all week.
I can't give y'all any more information, he said. TMI, TMI. Know what that means? Too much information.
Bengals trainer Paul Sparling said Blake had experienced no residual soreness after practice Thursday, which is the Bengals' day to work on passing downs.
Akili Smith, the rookie No.1 draftee and Blake's backup, stood to make his first NFL start had Blake's shoul der not improved. Smith relieved Blake in each of the first two games after Blake left with cramps and the injured shoulder, respectively.
Jeff's the starter, Smith said. If he happens to hurt his shoulder again, I got more (practice) reps this week, so I've got to be more productive.
Smith is 11-of-19 for 111 yards, no TDs and one interception. Blake is 25-of-47 for 250 yards, three TDs and two interceptions.
Smith has a 52.7 passer rating, Blake 72.1.
I'm happy with the amount of work I got this week, Smith said. I'm thankful, because I needed it. I'm definitely more comfortable now.
Coslet said Smith won't play unless necessary. The Bengals want Blake to play every snap possible in the 16-game season.
All our starters, I hope they play a full game, Coslet said. Blake hasn't played a full game yet, and I'd sure like to see it. It'd be nice.
