Bengals sign Covington

The Bengals signed rookie quarterback Scott Covington on Monday.

Covington, the University of Miami at Florida quarterback taken in the seventh round, signed a three-year contract. Terms of Covington's deal were not released, but according to other seventh-round deals it probably contains a bonus in the $25,000 range with salaries of $175,000, $250,000, $325,000.

That's no dent in the Bengals' payroll. According to June figures, they have $6.24 million to spend, behind only Cleveland ($8.5 million) and Philadelphia ($7.1 million). Those three account for more than a third of the league's $60.45 million cap room. But the Bengals have had no contact with corner Ryan McNeil and no interest in guard Matt O'Dwyer's $2 million bid.

MACK IN: The Bengals expect safety Tremain Mack to work out today and Wednesday before leaving for Thursday's DUI trial in Texas.
