Couch works out for Coslet

But UK QB likely gone when the Bengals pick

BY GEOFF HOBSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Bengals took a short trip Tuesday to watch Tim Couch go long.

Couch, the Kentucky quarterback expected to be the first pick in next month's NFL draft, threw passes to head coach Bruce Coslet and offensive coordinator Ken Anderson in Lexington, Ky., during a three-hour private session.

Coslet, a former tight end, caught the short and medium throws. Anderson, the Bengals' all-time leading passer, caught the long balls. It's the long stuff that has some scouts worried about Couch's arm strength.

“I don't know about that. You can't believe everything you read,” Coslet said.

“He's the real deal. He threw the ball down the field. He threw to us for about half an hour. You can actually tell more when you're just standing there catching the ball instead of watching him throw to a receiver.”

Coslet doesn't think Couch will be on the board when the Bengals pick third behind Cleveland and Philadelphia. But if he falls to third, it gets interesting for a franchise 90 minutes from the bluegrass.

“I don't know if Cleveland is picking him or not,” Bengals President and General Manager Mike Brown said. “If he's there when we pick, we'd sure be interested, along with all those other guys we're looking at.”

Coslet and Anderson left for Syracuse, N.Y., Tuesday night to see one of those other quarterbacks, the Orange's Donovan McNabb. They scouted Central Florida's Daunte Culpepper last week and still have to check out Oregon's Akili Smith.

As they did with Culpepper, Coslet and Anderson worked with Couch on the blackboard as well as in the field.
