Ambrose won't rule out return
But chance for playoffs is a lure
BY GEOFF HOBSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Free agent cornerback Ashley Ambrose won't rule out coming back to the Bengals, but don't count on his return.
It's still a possibility. I'm not saying I won't go back, Ambrose said Sunday.
Even though he said the Bengals are still an option, Ambrose admitted he would take less money to sign with a team that has playoff potential. And at this point, the defending champion Broncos look to be the best fit. The Falcons, Jaguars, Rams and Browns have also shown interest.
Yet only the Browns could come close to his desired $5 million per year, and they have designs on cornerbacks Dale Carter of Kansas City and Corey Fuller of Minnesota. Atlan ta has Ambrose's best friend in cornerback Ray Buchanan, but Buchanan's $3.2 million salary won't be matched by Ambrose. And Jacksonville is reportedly ready to close shop after dropping big deals last Friday on defensive tackle Gary Walker and safety Carnell Lake.
So the Bengals, who last offered Ambrose somewhere in the $3.5 million per year neighborhood, may end up offering him near the best deal.
The agent for Vikings nose guard Jerry Ball, still waiting for a proposal from the Bengals, said Sunday that Ball is seriously considering re-signing with Minnesota and another defensive line client, Henry Thomas, is again being pursued by New England.
