Coslet not to blame, Falcon says

BY GEOFF HOBSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer

MIAMI — Bengals coach Bruce Coslet got a Super endorsement here Thursday.

Falcons wide receiver Terance Mathis' career turned around in 1994 when he left Coslet's Jets. After making 93 catches during his first four years in the NFL, Mathis had 111 catches in '94 in Atlanta and has remained one of the game's top receivers.

But he has no problems with how Coslet handled him and even compares him to his current coach, Dan Reeves.

“When you play behind Al Toon and Rob Moore, they're great players and you're just going to have to pay your dues,” Mathis said. “(Coslet) has the same personality as Dan. He liked to joke and play around. The difference with Bruce and Dan is that Dan has more control.”

Put Mathis in the camp who believes the best NFL coaches are the ones who have the final say on the roster.

“The coach is the guy that's around the players all year round, he knows their ups and downs and their shortcomings,” Mathis said. “He has to be the one that makes the decision. I think (Coslet) is a good coach. But his hands are tied.”
