SAN DIEGO - Ken Anderson rarely endured shutouts as a Bengals quarterback, but the Pro Football Hall of Fame is a different matter.
Anderson, now the team's offensive coordinator, failed to gain induction to the Canton shrine. Anderson, who was also one of 15 finalists in 1996, did not make the cut Saturday to six modern-day players. Four of those were chosen for the Hall.
Anderson, who couldn't immediately reached for comment, doubted that he would gain election, though his career statistics (2,654 completions, 32,838 yards, 59.3 completion percentage) compared favorably to modern-day Hall of Fame quarterbacks such as Len Dawson, Dan Fouts, Bob Griese and Sonny Jurgensen.
''I've been in this position before, and it didn't work out,'' Anderson said recently.
If Anderson received at least four votes in the selection board's secret balloting, he will again appear on next year's preliminary list of nominees.
Former Bengals offensive tackle Anthony Munoz said Anderson's selection would have enhanced his afternoon.
''What a great way to spend this day if that would have been the case,'' Munoz said. ''That would have really, really been excellent.''
