Team takes risks,
puts Carter on notice

The Bengals took significant risks with their first two picks and created a sensation with the second.

Looking for a pass rushing linebacker, they chose Florida State defensive end Reinard Wilson, who had 13 1/2 sacks last year, with the intention of playing him at right OLB. They passed up two highly-rated linebackers, Dwayne Rudd of Alabama and Jamie Sharper of Virginia.

Their No. 2 choice was a revelation.

Looking for someone to light a fire under Ki-Jana Carter or take over the job all together, they took running back Corey Dillon out of Washington. Dillon will conjure up memories of Stanley Wilson - both for his running and his off-the-field troubles.

According to the Pro Football Weekly 1997 Draft Preview, published reports in Washington said Dillon was arrested when he was 15 for selling crack cocaine to three undercover officers. From 1987-1992, the preview said, Dillon was convicted of five juvenile offenses, including obstructing a police officer and assault and theft at a department store.

Indications are Dillon, 21, hasn't been arrested as an adult.
The Bengals expected to add to their offensive line depth in the late rounds. They got to it early by taking Michigan center Rod Payne in the third round, deciding he was the best player available. He'll be heir-apparent to 11-year veteran Derrick Brilz.

1. REINARD WILSON, LB, Florida State
The Bengals stressed Wilson's pass-rushing skills and downplayed his pass- coverage inexperience. He set the Florida State career record with 35 1/2 sacks. ''He is an intense, 100-percent, 60-minute player,'' assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau said.

2. COREY DILLON, RB, Washington
The Bengals figured that between Ki-Jana Carter's 1995 knee injury, his 1997 condition, and Garrison Hearst's departure, they had to go for the best running back on their board. The 6-foot, 217-pounder set school records with 1,555 yards rushing and 23 touchdowns despite not starting until the fourth game. And he's a good pass catcher.

3. ROD PAYNE, C, Michigan
Offensive line coach Paul Alexander made it clear Derrick Brilz is still the man. But Brilz is 33 and coming off foot problems. And the 305-pound Payne was the top center on many boards as a rare four-year starter at Ann Arbor.

TIM SULLIVAN COLUMN
Bruce Coslet brought a tougher tone to the Bengals when he became their head coach last season, and Saturday's draft selections suggested that the organization has now instituted a zero tolerance policy for sloth.

ANALYSIS
The Bengals sowed the seeds for a potentially high return with their top two picks. But the risks they took were greater than average.
